KILGORE - Since the 1930's Kilgore has been known as an "oil town." After all it's home to the "Worlds Richest Acre."
Holly Cox is from Kilgore and she said, "I've lived here 21 years, and it would be nice to have a change, its always been an oil town."
Different oil businesses cover Kilgore, from one end of town to the other.
But now Kilgore Economic Development Corporation wants to bring a different line of work.
KEDC President, Bill Adamson said, "We've strived to diversify Kilgore's economy to offset some downturns in the oil and gas industry."
The KEDC is relying on industries like: Berco, Skeeter Boats, General Dynamics, Closure Systems and many more to help boost Kilgore's economy.
These companies cover a lot of industries, from mining, to manufacturing, web design and even boating.
Adamson said, "When we have down turns these industries as diverse as they are, they are gonna help keep our tax base up for our sales taxes."
And because of today's economy, this is comforting to the people of Kilgore.
Shawn Jackson said, "It would open more jobs, a lot of people are getting laid off in the oil companies or getting hours cut..with more business it will help economy and help the community as a whole."
Adamson said Kilgore will always rely on the oil industry but its always good to have a back-up plan.
