Kilgore amends noise ordinance

Kilgore residents now have a simplified noise ordinance after council members voted Tuesday to cut subjective language from the document.

The ordinance was at the heart of an ongoing dispute between The Back Porch restaurant near Kilgore College and the surrounding neighborhood.

“I do know that if you are disturbed and you call, I do not think that is subjective; so I think there still needs to be some recourse for citizens that object to (noise),” said Carolyn Woods, one of four homeowners who spoke to the council begging members not to strip the ordinance of its subjective language.

“If you vote for this, there will be no recourse for any of the citizens (who) have had a problem with this.”

The noise ordinance, which was patterned after other cities’ regulations, was revisited at a June 24 workshop after a case filed against The Back Porch was dismissed from municipal court, with the judge suggesting the council reconsider the rules.
