This Friday, Oct. 28, is the third annual Kilgore Auto Parts Chili Cook-Off—an event where a car will be donated to a local resident by a group of Kilgore auto parts stores.

Businesses sponsoring the chili cook-off and the “Donation Car Project” include: ABC Auto Parts, Bumper to Bumper Auto Parts, NAPA Auto Parts, O'Reilly Auto Parts and Woodfin Automotive.

The chili cook-off, also sponsored by the local auto parts stores, is set for 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Bumper to Bumper Auto Parts parking lot in Kilgore, located at 1305 N. Kilgore St.

Tickets for the cook-off are $1 each, and prizes will be given for the best chili in two categories: Judges’ Choice and People’s Choice.

The recipient of the car is Patty Cox of Liberty City. Cox is a working community member who is in need of reliable transportation.

The car is a 1997 Ford Crown Victoria. Parts to repair the car were donated by local businesses ABC Auto Parts, Bumper to Bumper Auto Parts, O’Reilly Auto Parts, and Woodfin Automotive.

The Kilgore College automotive programs worked on the car using donated parts from the auto parts stores to bring the car to like-new condition.

KC’s Automotive Repair Program, under the direction of D’Wayne Shaw, completed mechanical repairs, and the KC Auto Body Program completed the exterior and interior detail work to complete the project. The Auto Body Program at KC is under the direction of Joel Laws.

Last year, $1,800 in proceeds from the chili cook-off was donated to the Kilgore Crisis Center.
