As enrollment at Kilgore College continues to grow, especially among students from Longview. School officials are looking to expand the Longview campus but the campus lies in the middle of an historical district, which adds construction regulations.

Kilgore College President Dr. Bill Holda says the school has been trying to add on to the campus in Longview for about two years but they have faced difficulties due to those added restrictions. Dr. Holda says this week the school is submitting an application to rezone the properties for educational use and remove them from the historical zone.

School officials say if that is approved by the city of Longview, Kilgore College's expansion can move forward, something Dr. Holda is looking forward to.

"We are really committed to meeting the educational needs of the residents and we look forward to being able to do that expansion."

Executive Dean of the Longview Campus Dr. Julie Fowler says the expansion will be good for the whole community.

"We are an important part of Longview and we want to continue that and I want to continue it because I have a firm belief that education is a great improver of people's lives."

Longview Mayor Jay Dean says as long as Kilgore College officials provide him with a plan and a timeline he's willing to help the expansion move forward.

"We're excited about working with Kilgore College in any way we possibly can, we do not intend to make any ordinance prohibitive for them to be able to expand their facilities..it's good for the region..it's good for Longview..and it's good for Kilgore."
