Kilgore man brings the wrong luggage to Dubai airport

April 27, 2009 - 6:14pm

KILGORE - Traveling around the world to hunt exotic animals is what Dee Headley loves to do.

Most recently Dee took a trip to Pakistan to hunt blue sheep, on his companies tab.

Headley said, "As part of our benefits and as a reward for our performance my boss sends us on international hunts."

But getting there was the tough part.

Before arriving in Pakistan, he had a layover in Dubai, which is where the trouble began.

He said, "When I got to Dubai there was definitely some problems with my firearm. I didn't have the appropriate permits or documentation or permission they said I needed to have. Thats where they inspected all my equipment I had and confiscated my scopes, walkie talkie, satellite phone, riffle and everything I had....I was pretty much positive my hunt was over, I figured I'd be spending a few days looking through steel bars in Dubai."

After being searched and detained for about four hours Headley was able to catch his flight to pakistan, but had to leave his riffle behind.

Dee said, "Luckily enough with a rather ancient gun and scope I got a shot at a blue sheep."

And he was able to pick his riffle up when he stopped in Dubai on his way back to the U.S.

And if anything he learned to be prepared when traveling to other countries with guns.

Headley says the people in Pakistan were very kind to him and this mishap will not keep him from hunting there again.

I enjoy hunting abroad and find this story rather interesting. I too am interested in hunting the china blue sheep and was wondering what outfitter Mr. Headley used for his hunt.

Thanks

Hi Chad ... it was me who handled Headley's Blue Sheep Hunt in Shimshal Valley and soonafter I uploaded some beautiful photos of this hunt at http://pakistanguides.com/hunting/blue_sheep/index.htm Take a look and let me know if you want to hunt our Blue Sheep which is much bigger with thick horns as compared to what you see in Nepal or China. However, this hunt is comparatively more expensive due to engagement of 24 porters who carried our hunting gear, kitchen, food and fuel and also demands good physical fitness to walk across so many steep ridges that we rambled in four days. Who else will hate Dubai's airport authorities other than me who lost all those wonderful gifts which Headley was going to give me, especially I miss that spotting scope, those walki talkies and some other hunting gear ! .. I'm sure Dee will return for many more hunts in Pakistan & also bring his family !
