Kilgore is lined with oil derricks and pretty soon if the city has it's way, it will be lined with hundreds of trees.

City officials are busy trying to make this "City of Stars" into a Tree City USA.

Kilgore zoning and planning director Carol Windham explains,"It's a designation that many cities across the United States have, it really tells people coming into the city that you have great pride in your city and your landscaping."

Kilgore is almost at the halfway point to get this title. They have already finished the first step, getting a tree care ordinance on August 27. This ordinance will establish a tree board, who will finish out the application.

These board members will need to plan an Arbor Day celebration for April, as well as come up with a tree care plan and program. These items will be a blueprint to show Kilgore residents how the city plants and maintains trees.

The budget for this plan will only be two dollars per capita.
