The city of Kilgore is proposing a new idea to attract more tourists.

They want to take their namesake and brighten it up a bit ... literally.

It all started from a suggestion made online to give Kilgore's oil derricks a bit of a boost.

"... Almost something similar to Christmas lighting shows you see, or shows you see in Vegas, but for Kilgore," said Main Street Manager Clara Chaffin.

City employees are proposing lighting up 13-17 of the derricks around downtown them from the ground up, with color changing LEDs and additional lighting, then synchronizing it to music.

"We envision it to be every night or during special events," Chaffin said. "We definitely envision using it frequently throughout the year."

The lighting would be paid for by the city's Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT), which is already set aside to fund projects that attract out of towners.

Kilgore is hoping to do a test run on one derrick to show what it would look like in July.

Then, they would seek approval from the Kilgore Historical Preservation Foundation and the city council.

If they get OK, they would like to have it all up and running by Christmas.
