Tyler, Texas — History shows that Labor Day was celebrated with parades, festivals, and speeches and although we don't have those here in East Texas, we did have some hot weather, so I headed out to the lake to find out what people were up to on their day off.

Some spend Labor Day vacationing, shopping, and taking advantage of the last chance to wear white, but what about the history of this holiday?

We asked some locals who were enjoying their day at Lake Palestine if they knew the first state to celebrate Labor Day as a National holiday legally, and which president signed it into law.

Although many people didn't know the details behind Labor Day, such as; Oregon being the first state and President Cleveland signing it into law in 1894, there was no question when it came to its significance.

East Texans told us that Labor Day is for people to take a day off from work and some younger children said it's a day for fun.
"yes its about people being able to take a day of from work."

Ultimately, Labor Day is a day to celebrate workers and overall many people in the working force here were enjoying their day off with family and friends.

Most people were fishing and heading out on the boar to enjoy their day off from work before heading back tomorrow.
