Larry Wade Jr. is the head band director at John Tyler High School, and was named the "John Tyler Teacher of the Year." Wade has been the head band director for four years, and in his short time he has helped the program grow from less than eighty students, to more than 180 band members. "It's been a long road to get to where I am, a lot of trials and tribulations coming through school, doing all I need and whatever, just going through the ups and downs of life, to overcome a lot of those obstacles I'm just blessed to you know even be in the position I am now," said Wade.

Wade was born and raised in Tyler, and has been playing music since he was four years old. He was the drum major of the John Tyler 'Big Blue Band' and of the Prairie View A&M band, before finding his way back to his alma mater. "Music is a thing i love so it was a way for me to educate students through the musical arts," said Wade.

Being a teacher is somewhat of a family tradition. He is following in the footsteps of his grandmother, parents, sister, and other relatives. Wade said that's why he thought he would never be a teacher, but it was his passion for music that led him to where he is today. "A lot of people dread getting up in the morning to come to work, but I'm excited because i get to share my music with my students and Instilling them with awareness and the importance because music can change your day," said Wade.

There are 22 students that will be going to the state competition in Austin, and everyone credits him and his assistant director for making them so great. Both the school principal, and the students say its his passion and love for music, and for the band members, that really makes him a standout educator.

Wade and his band will travel to California during spring break to perform at Disneyland. They are still in need of funds for the trip, and will be having a fundraiser at Luby's on Friday February 21, 2014 from 4-8 p.m. 15% of the proceeds will benefit the band's trip.
