The League of Women voters will meet on Monday, May 20, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fellowship Hall of first Christian Church on Loop 323 and Broadway to present a new study about the homelessness in Smith County.

Director of Programming for the Salvation Army will be giving the presentation. The city of Tyler and Smith County is sponsoring the discussion at their monthly meeting and it is opened to all members of the community that are interested.

According to Wilson, most people think of the homeless as those older people on street corners when in reality in Tyler, the average age of a homeless person is nine years old.

The majority of homeless people are children of school age, homelessness and hunger go hand in hand and it is difficult for children to study and do well in school when they have little or no food, and no secure place to live.

At present there are 30 children that take shelter at the Salvation Army.

It is also difficult and sometimes impossible for the eligible homeless to apply for a job without public transportation. The League of Women voters is conducting a study on the transportation needs in Smith County.

This report is scheduled to be released by December of 2013.
