The thought of something as American as the nation’s favorite pastime can be gratifying for many. Yet, for some, it poses a host of challenges when played on a traditional diamond of dirt and grass.

The Miracle League of East Texas hopes to make this sport possible for all East Texans, regardless of their ability — or disability.

The newly-formed Miracle League of East Texas is seeking funds to build a baseball diamond and start a league for children with special needs.

This field of dreams will not only benefit children with special needs, but all children, said Lisha Mack the mother of a child with Down’s syndrome.

“Anything that is going to provide unlimited access for all children is an asset to the city,” she said.

The league hopes to raise $750,000 to build a field with rubber surfacing and covered seated and dugouts at Lear Park — an area donated by the City of Longview. They are already more than $40,000 toward that goal.

The rubber surfacing will allow children with physical disabilities to freely participate in the league without the challenges presented on a traditional baseball diamond.
