Left lane law enforcement

The state of Texas has a statute that prohibits driving in the left laneof all roads with a minimum of four lanes unless you are passing someone, or turning left.

Montgomery and Fort Bend county's Department of Public Safety troopers will be on the roads Wednesday looking for violators.

Tommy Cross is a Texas truck driver who spends the majority of his week on the road, and he wants everyone to be aware of this law.

"Everybody will say well, i didn't know about it and most people probably don't know about it but then again you take the responsibility to drive so you should have the responsibility to know the law as to what you need to do," said Cross.

Cross believes the left lane isn't even safe to drive in, and thinks if an emergency were to happen, its in a driver's best interest to stay in the right lane.

"It is in their safety, its for everybody's safety, you know, everybody has somewhere to go if they're in the right lane."

KETK spoke with some East Texans to see what they thought about this law enforcement today.

"You know you're wanting to go the speed limit, but you have someone in front of you going 35... they need to get off the road."

"Well, it's the law isn't it? Yes why shouldn't people follow the law? Why should they enforce some laws and not all laws?"

And to some didn't even know there was a left lane law.

"No, i didn't know about the law... theres all kinds of laws we don't know about... its probably another way for the people who are supposed to protect and serve us to take in.. to take."

yep sounds good on paper, but put all those vehicles in the right lane and see what happens to traffic.
so our taxes go to widen the road to 2 or 3 or 4 lanes, but if everybody has to stay in the right lane what's the point?

Makes you wonder how they passed their driving test, eh? Guess some folks are too busy texting to read traffic signs- like the one that says "Left Lane for Passing Only".. Gee- wonder what they mean by that??

It doesn't come up on the driving test. When my kids took driver education it was not mentioned. And I asked them. Want to lower taxes? Enforce this law. The fine is $300. I know someone that had to pay it for left lane cruising in Dallas. Around East Texas we would be rolling in extra cash.

That's right, its about revenue not safety. The right lane or lanes have always been for people who will be getting off the highway pretty soon and for people that want to drive slower than the posted speed down to 45 mph legally, the left lane has always been for people that are going straight through without exiting and people that want to drive the posted speed limit. Not saying that people don't speed in the left lanes because they do. If I am going a long way I always drive in the left lane

It's the same in every state. Drive on the right, pass on the left. There is no "fast" or "slow" lane. Lanes are passing and curb lane. Would love to see enforcement on all multiple lane highways. US 69 south would be a great place to start.

Thank you for finally enforcing this law! It's not just a Texas law, it's a law in most states. Pass left, drive right. In PA it's on signs l along the highways. Driving in the left lane when you're not passing is hindering the flow of traffic on the highway, it's a lane for passing people. Pass or get out of the way.
