Less than half of incoming UT freshmen are white
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - White students make up less than half of the incoming freshmen for the first time in the history of the University of Texas at Austin.
School officials said Tuesday that 47.6 percent of the incoming freshmen are white, down from 51.1 percent a year ago. Hispanics are next at 23.1 percent, followed by Asians at 17.3 percent.
UT administrator Kristi Fisher says the figures are based on the 12th day of class but shouldn't change much before they become official in October.
Including postgraduate and law students, the school's total enrollment is 52.1 percent white.
Officials say the freshman figures match the changing demographics of Texas. State figures estimate that 45.1 percent of Texans are white.
