Jacksonville Fire Department is using a new system that helps keep their firefighters safe.

They are the first department in East Texas to use it.

This new monitoring system is called P.A.S.S, it stands for personal- accountibility- safety- system and the system new  works off a computer.

When the firefighters get a call, they scan their air -pack with a device.

It enters their name in the computer then it sends a signal to the chief's unit and it helps monitor their oxygen levels when fighting fires.

"Then the chief can move the person around on the screen and assign them to different tasks and if they need to get out of the scene immediately instead of having to call them on the radio you can send a signal to their air pack and it sends a signal alarm and it goes off and they know they need to get out immediately," says Paul White, Fire Chief, Jacksonville Fire Department.

Chief White says, safety comes first, and it's a great way to keep track of everyone at  the  fire scene.
