Fifth graders at E.J. Moss Intermediate School of Lindale were scheduled to perform a musical theater program at the school on Thursday night titled, "In God We Trust."

Now, due to a complaint from an organization called "Freedom From Religion Foundation," the school will not host the play with religious undertones, but a modified version sensitive to all viewers.

Elizabeth Cavell, staff attorney for the "Freedom From Religion Foundation," submitted a letter to Lindale Superintendent, Stan Surratt, stating a concerned parent had contacted the organization and complained that God would be referenced throughout the program through scripts and music composed by Chris and Diane Machen.

Cavell states the Machens run a music an worship ministry whose goals are to "lead the church in worship and reach non-believers with the Gospel of Jesus Christ."

Cavell received copies of the scripts the children will read during the performance stating the students will be reciting the following:

"What you have heard today helps to explain why the founding fathers of our nation believed and trusted in God. The people who struggled and fought to establish this nation did so because of a dream. That dream was to have a place where they could freely proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ."

Cavell goes on to say, "This is an egregious violation of the First Amendment and it is illegal to compel
students to participate in religious expression."

"This is clearly illegal and unconstitutional indoctrination of children into a particular religion," says Cavell.

Following the written statement and decision not to perform the play on campus, Pastor Tom Buck, of First Baptist Church Lindale responded, "Although it saddens me to see an objection against such a positive program in our community schools, I fully understand the decision made by the Lindale Schools and support them in making this difficult choice. I thank them for their hard work. It is not a coincidence that our schools consistently stand out as some of the best in Texas."

Pastor Buck then announced he will be renting the Performing Arts Center at the Lindale High School where the entire musical can be performed by those students who wish to participate.

The event is set to take place Wednesday May 29th, at 7:00 p.m.

Buck says, "The reality is that the contents of the musical program were not only educational, inspiring and uplifting, but they truly represented the values of the Lindale community while accurately presenting the Christian heritage of the United States of America."

"While I am a strong advocate against the establishment of a state religion, the actions of the FFRF actually work to do just the opposite by forcing their religious views upon us.," says Buck. "The practical result is that Atheism becomes the de facto national religion. I personally believe the framers of the constitution would have had no problem with allowing students to express the common held values of the community in which they live."

Now, now... calm down, y'all. Let's everyone keep your imaginary friends, gods & psychological delusions at YOUR homes and at YOUR churches. While the founding fathers where largely Christian, they clearly saw the danger of the mixing religion and government. They wanted to make sure that everyone could worship as they saw fit, or not at all if that was their preference. Government-sponsored organizations, including public schools, should be neutral regarding religion. Not pro-religion and not anti-religion either. The atheists are not trying to force their beliefs (or lack thereof) on anyone, and neither should Christians.

SCRIPT LINE: "Our country's freedom was bought by the struggles, tears and the blood of Jesus Christ." — NO MA'AM. ABSOLUTELY NOT. That makes you sound like zombie-obsessed hematomaniacs! I don't want my kids exposed to that horror & silliness on tax-funded school time.

No one in the 5th. grade was being forced to participate. This is a tradition that has been going on for many years. I was so proud when I saw this wonderful play when my grandsons were in it. Now, because one person objects, it has to be stopped. Our Founding Fathers never intended that we not have prayer in school. Separation of church and state was meant to protect religion from government not the other way around. I hope all of Lindale shows up to support our teachers and students.

We do not think this program should be modified. May we stand up for our God and our country!

I Believe that God is not happy with the way Christain are laying down and allowing anad letting satan win. If we as christains would stand up for God we would not be in this mess.

should my taxes be paying for YOUR particular religion? Why isn't MY religion also preached in this play that I am helping to pay for?

If you can not attend the play in Lindale, Texas at 7 PM on Wednesday, May 29th; Fly your Flag, whereever you live, in Support of America and its Founding Fathers on Wednesday, May 29th, 2013. God Bless America!

I'm starting to think we need a Foundation Against the Freedom From Religion Foundation.

"...allowing students to express the common held values of the community in which they live." Common held has nothing to do with it. Majority doesn't rule. If that were the case many things people find appalling today would still be legal because it was once commonly held as acceptable. That doesn't make it right.

The Constitution said we had FREEDOM TO PRACTICE OUR OWN RELIGION... not freedom FROM religion. Virtually all the founding fathers were quite religious. What they objected to was forcing one particular religion (like the Church of England) on everyone.

If the play has some religiousness themes in it, it is fine as long as it does not force people to participate in it.

I don't think anyone but the parents, staff and students have the right to complain about what goes on in their school! It's none of that groups business!!!!

I agree completely!

What part of the script was incorrect with regards to the history of the founding of this country? Time to STAND UP. Join us all in Lindale at the Performing Arts Center (High School campus) on May 29th at 7pm. It won't be long before we can't sing "God Bless America" or say the pledge using "one nation under God". It's not just going to be in our schools...it's going to be illegal in public period at the rate we're relegating our rights as a majority to the few. TAKE A STAND!

God bless the person or persons who complained about this and God bless Lindale and the pastor who is helping make this musical happen! I hope every Christian in lindale and surrounding areas show up!

Every Christian in the Lindale area should be at that performance. May God bless those who stand for our Lord and our country and what it was founded on. Way to go Lindale 5th graders and their teachers.
A proud Lindale graduate. Claudie Marie Cline Thompson

Amen Claudie! Both of my boys participated in this program and it was awesome. We need to stand for our rights. May God Bless this program!
