The 5th grade musical “In God We Trust” will be presented tonight in Lindale in its original form.

That’s after a parental complaint prompted the Freedom from Religion Foundation to challenge plans to hold the play last week at E.J. Moss Intermediate School.

The Lindale ISD instead allowed a modified form of the play to be presented last week.

But, local pastor Tom Buck rented the Lindale ISD Performing Arts Center so the religion-themed musical could be shown intact tonight. According to a news release from Buck, support for tonight’s performance has been “overwhelming,” with positive response from all over East Texas.

Buck notes that organizers “have had to secure an overflow area that will carry a live feed of the program.”

The event is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., Wednesday night.

All this to accomodate a select few who might be "offended." And believe me, they are indeed very few, because in the heart of the bible belt in Texas, where you can find a church every quarter mile, you can be assured there was no outrage in mentioning God. I'll bet you dollars to donuts if this was a play about befouling or defaming Jesus Christ, the atheists would love it.

The program is about History - the history of the founding of our country. It is not a "religious" program, per se. Our country was founded by men & women who wished to be free to worship however they wanted. I learned in public school that our founders were of English decent, which would have made them Catholic or Protestant, so yes any reference to religion in this program would be a Christian one. But again, this is a musical about our American History. I would know since I have seen it.

This is the way it should be done...glad the church is sponsoring the program and found a suitable venue for the performance...because...this Christian play should never have been done, with specific Christian references, in a public school. Public schools should not endorse a Christian-oriented play that ignores the faiths of non-Christian students or excludes them from participating because they do not believe what they are saying/singing...it is freedom OF religion (for all), folks..
