Sometimes churches are unaware they're leaving a group of children out during vacation bible school, but First Christian Church in Kilgore is an exception. "Its difficult to see children that feel like they don't have a place, and its difficult to see moms and dads struggle because their kid is different," said Laura Lea Blanks, Director Of Christian Education at First Christian Church in Kilgore.

One church member's child was feeling excluded from VBS last year, which led Director of Children's Ministries, Meredeth Brown, to hold a special needs bible school. Brown said, "God just really led and put this on our heart that she's not the only one out there that needs to be included into vacation bible school." Brown says inspiration also came from a church in Mississippi who's been doing this for 13 years. She said she wanted to "just reach out to a community that sometimes it feels very isolated because of their life situations." Blanks agreed and said, "we don't want you to struggle every day by yourself. We want to encourage you and love on your child, and help you."

Blanks works with special needs children everyday, and knows the struggle their families go through. She said, "90% of those families don't go to church in general because they're asked to leave because their child is complicated. We want your child to come here because they're complicated."

They told KETK it will be like a typical VBS with games, crafts, lessons, and even a Willie Roberson from Duck Dynasty theme. However, Blanks thinks the outcome will be like no other. "While I think we're going to offer a big, great vacation bible school, I think that we're going to be the ones changed in the end," said Blanks.

The VBS is July 22-24, 6-8:30 pm, for ages 4 and older. There will also be a Coffee House for parents to relax and hang out with other parents. To find out more information visit the church's website - www.fcckilgore.org, or call 903-984-3963.
