Tyler , TX (KETK) — About once a month the Tyler Fire Department does a cooking show called 'Cooking with Fire.' When the newest fire department opened, and the firemen cooked for all of the guests, it sparked this idea. "And we were like, they should teach us how to do that, that would be a really cool show.," said Serena Butcher, public relations for the City of Tyler, and believed this was the perfect idea."Everyone loves firemen and everyone loves to eat, so it's a great combination," said Butcher.
Each episode features a different firefighter, and their specialty dish. They always try to make something easy and healthy. Some of the meals have included things like, chili rubbed salmon with pineapple, big easy gumbo, and chocolate peanut butter sweet bread. Butcher said, "they have done amazing food, its really good, and I've tasted all of it and it is to die for."
Once a month they give Tyler a taste of their kitchen, and a behind the scenes look at the station. Fire Marshal and Tyler Fire Department PIO, Paul Findley, said, "We always look for ways to communicate with the citizens. A lot of times when we meet people, we're meeting them in situations where they may be having the worst day of their life." He believes this is a great way for the public to catch a glimpse of the life inside the station.
Tyler Fire says they're giving good recipes on a personal level, and important information as well. "Every single year across the United States the number one area in the home where fires start is in the kitchen. We're going in the kitchen and cooking some good food, but every now and then we're slipping in a few tid bits of good safety information," said Findley.
They will record their next episode on March 19, 2014, and will feature chicken and dumplings. To find out more information, or watch some of the episodes, click here.
