AUSTIN - It was a wild night for police in Austin, after a man they had in custody escaped from his handcuffs.

Police arrested the man on a felony narcotics charge. They were taking him to jail in an unmarked police car when he broke free. He then tried to avoid police by jumping from a bridge onto the interstate.

Police say the man grabbed a bar on the lower part of the bridge, then fell 40 feet to the ground, breaking his ankle and leg.

The man is now back in custody.
