TYLER--According to AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, one in eleven drivers admit to driving drunk in the past. In East Texas, experts say those numbers are no where near the amount of drivers that are actually drunk and driving.
In Tyler, KETK asked people if they have ever driven while intoxicated. Some admitted they had and others said they had not. However, every person questioned said they knew someone who had driven while intoxicated at least once.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving Executive Director, Vicki Knox, says one in eleven drivers may admit to it, but that's not an accurate portrayal of how many drivers are actually driving drunk.
"Those are probably extremely low, the actual numbers are probably much higher than anyone can imagine if the truth be known and if we could measure that," says Knox.
Knox also says 40 percent of all fatal accidents are caused by repeat DWI offenders. Also, Knox says first time DWI offenders have driven while intoxicated 87 times on average before being arrested.
"It gives you an idea of the magnitude of the problem we have in this country," says Knox.
In addition, experts says too many people get behind the wheel without realizing that they are intoxicated. That's because despite what many people like Kimberly White believe, there is not a set number of drinks a person can consume before reaching that .08 limit.
"As far as legal limit goes, yeah they'd be considered drunk and driving. But, the limit is 2 beers right? I don't know," says Kimberly White.
Experts say there are too many variables to determine a set number of drinks. Instead, experts say drinkers should plan on having a designated driver.
