HUNTINGTON - Mack Darnell broke free from the pump after replacing his gas tank - with batteries.
"sixteen batteries have been welded and installed in place."
Judging from the response of East Texans after seeing our story - Darnell might need to consider making his hobby - a career.
He says the first thing everyone asks him is "what are the best cars to convert?"
Based on his research by the Electric Vehicles of America, Inc., his S-10 T145 is the most efficient. It averages 61 miles per charge.
The VW Rabbit goes 60 miles, followed by the Ford Escort and the VW Vanagan.
Darnell stands by his statement that he's saving money with the truck - despite skeptics.
"it would be one-third the cost to replace the batteries than to keep the car up."
So, is this really practical?
"this would be the most practical for a commuter, not someone that drives 100 miles to work. The average commute distance is about 30-35 miles away and I think it would be just wonderful for them."
He has no plans to open up an electric car shop in Huntington.
"people come to me for that, I don't have to."
For now, Mack will continue to zip around Huntington in his blue truck. And when you see him, don't forget to wave.
