KILGORE---Students at Kilgore College may have one less excuse to skip class next year.

That's because officials there are trying to begin a free shuttle system for students going from Longview to Kilgore.

It's about thirteen miles or a fifteen to twenty minute drive from Longview to Kilgore, so making that drive everyday can cut into anyone's budget, especially a student's budget, that's why officials are considering this plan.

Everyday, Jasmine Brazile goes from Longview to Kilgore so she can attend class at Kilgore College.

"It's about fifteen minutes. It's very peaceful, but it gets a little annoying at times," Brazile says.

The drive time is a little easier to deal with than shelling out the cash to fill up her car.

"It takes about $55 to fill up my car," Brazile explains.

That extra cost for gas, and the promise prices will get even higher is why officials at Kilgore College have spent the last month discussing a free shuttle system from Longview to Kilgore for students.

"The more we discussed it, the more we felt we needed to press forward," says Mike Jenkins, the Vice President of Student Development.

Now they're talking to the Longview Transportation Department and East Texas Council of Government to develop a plan for the shuttle and get it started quickly.

"Our goal, if we're going to provide it, is to have something up and going by the fall semester," Jenkins explains.

The cost has yet to be determined, but Kilgore College officials say, the school wants to take care of it.

"We are committed to providing this service at no cost to our students," Jenkins confirms.

A free ride to class may be all it takes to make sure students like Jasmine can stay in school and out of the "red."

Officials at Kilgore College estimate about sixty percent of their students are from outside of Kilgore.

They have a survey on their website for those students to fill out, so they can determine the best shuttle times and routes.
