Emma Boswell, Sharonda's mom, said, "Thank God she's alive. Thank God she's OK. Thank God it's no worse that what it is."
Judging by the way little 4-year-old Sharonda Wade plays with her brothers and sisters, you'd never know what she's been through.
On Thursday, just before 11 a.m., the mailman makes his rounds in a north Tyler neighborhood. Once he turns onto Grand Avenue, his whole day is turned upside down.
Police say at the same time the postal worker was turning the truck around, Sharonda was headed to him to get the mail.
Officer Don Martin, Tyler Police Department, said, "She stumbled and fell and came on the left side, driver on the right side. Didn't see her."
That's when she was run over.
"Who's fault is this? I blame her. I just got done telling all my kids, ‘Don't go outside without adult supervision.’"
Mary Kerrm, Sharonda's grandma, said, "He was so apologetic. He was so worried about her. He wanted to see how she was.. He was a real nice man.
Sharonda was taken to Mother Francis Hospital and was later released. Fortunately, she didn't suffer any major injuries, just bumps and bruises on her right arm.
"If she hadn't been so small, it would have hurt her really bad. Grown ups -- It would have hurt bad."
Although Sharonda walked away from what could have been a devastating accident, police offer this advice:
"As a parent, make sure you know where your kids are at, especially if they're around vehicles that are in a public street," Martin said.
As for drivers, "Look behind you to make sure there's no children."
A lesson Sharonda will never forget.
The U.S. Postal Service is investigating. At this point, they have no comment.
