Lone Star Military Farmers lending helping hand to ETX gardners
Jacksonville, Texas (KETK) — Jewel Pittman of Jacksonville, has been researching how to start her own garden ever since she retired; for her health and for her wealth, Pittman says, I just know that each thing that I make myself from one little seed is going to save me money, and help my family out too." But, she never had the energy, or equipment to get started, Pittman says, "I have a tiny little mantis tiller but i can't use it anymore because of my back and heart trouble."
With the help of the Lone Star Military Farmers new plowing program they came out and helped her till her new garden, all for free. They even give you some seeds to get started! The seeds are donated by the Spooktacular Bull bash, and other East Texas Organizations.
Lois Hutson from Lone Star Military Farmers says. "We just come out with our tractors and plow and disk it up and till it up for you, all you have to do then is just take your seeds and a hoe and rake and your ready to plant!"
Their mission is to help people who want to help themselves. Pittman says she’s grateful for this program. She said growing her own produce is something she never learned growing up. Pittman says, "My mother and daddy knew but I don't know, and it's just a marvelous thing that they are doing for people." Now, she plans to fill the fresh dirt with fruits and veggies, And live long enough to tell her grandson cash all about how important it is to eat fresh foods and be self reliant, when he grows up.
The Lone Star Military Farmers are also seeking donations of farm equipment or people to help plow yards.
