Longtime Democrat switching parties
November 6, 2009 - 3:38pm

JACKSONVILLE — A longtime East Texas Democrat is switching sides.

State Representative Chuck Hopson says President Obama does not reflect his views so he is leaving the Democratic party.

Hopson, a Jacksonville native, says he will be running as a Republican in 2010.

The pharmacist in Cherokee County has represented Cherokee, Houston, Panola and Rusk counties for eight years.

Representative Merritt released a statement on Chairman Chuck Hopson's party switch:

"Chairman Hopson has always represented the conservative values of his district with integrity and distinction. As a life long Republican I am truly honored to have him join our party".

Way to go Chuck! Welcome aboard. Now, represent the people, what is right and best unlike most politicians.
