Eddy L. “Ed” Bower, a longtime community activist who pioneered a local Citizens on Patrol anti-crime group, died Monday after a long battle with cancer that ended with pneumonia, his wife said Tuesday. He was 77.

Bower spent many years patrolling the streets of his Pine Tree neighborhood keeping an eye out for anything suspicious — but he wasn’t a police officer. Those who knew him said he was a concerned member of the community who felt it was his duty to help his neighbors and law enforcement.

Bower was co-president of Longview’s first Citizens on Patrol crime watch group until his partner’s health declined, at which time Bower took on the full duties.

Longview police spokeswoman Debra Stiles said Bower was the leader of Lancer Crime Watch group and the District A Crime Watch group.
