Longview daycare worker fired after hitting child with shoe
Longview, Texas (LNJ) — A Longview church has fired a day care worker over what a state agency termed “inappropriate discipline” of a child. An investigative report indicates the former employee hit the child with a shoe.
Oakland Heights Baptist Church Child Development Center fired the employee in June before an investigation by the center and the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services Childcare Licensing Division.
The worker struck the child as punishment for taking off his shoes, according to the department’s report, which was obtained through a state open records request.
“There is sufficient evidence that inappropriate discipline techniques were used,” the department said. “There is sufficient evidence to determine the caregiver did not demonstrate good judgement and self control when disciplining a child.”
The report does not list the worker’s name, the age of the child, the worker’s length of employment or the exact termination date.
“Based on the internal investigation that I did at the center and before the state completed their investigation, I terminated the employee,” center Director Jamie Wright said Wednesday. “I’m not allowed to give out any of that information due to confidentiality.”
