Longview ISD looks at bus privatization
Longview, TX — Hiring out bus services has saved Mount Pleasant ISD money and eliminated substantial leg work during the last several years, the district’s superintendent said.
Longview ISD is considering taking similar steps.
Mount Pleasant Superintendent Judd Marshall, who was the Mount Pleasant High School principal during the 2012-13 school year when the district began working with Durham School Services, said the transition to the private company had several hiccups, but has proven valuable for the district.
“I can say this, at the end of our first year ... we ended up saving about $78,000,” Marshall said. “We had some hiccups along the way because it was a new system. We understood that when you do something totally new it wouldn’t be smooth, but after the first couple months of the year last year, we were in good shape.”
In fall 2012, Mount Pleasant ISD agreed to a three-year contract with Durham School Services.
