Longview ISD making strides on Brown vs. Board anniversary
Longview — Sixty years ago, the Supreme Court outlawed school segregation in America with its ruling in the landmark case, Brown vs. the Topeka Board of Education. Today, there is a celebration in Longview ISD, as the district has been granted partial unitary status — meaning it has come into compliance with many facets of a 44-year-old desegregation order.
Officials are hopeful that full unitary status will be obtained before 2014 ends.
The partial unitary status eliminates federal oversight of transportation, extracurricular activities, some aspects of staff assignments, resource allocation and facilities, which effectively means the U.S. Department of Justice has given the stamp of approval that Longview ISD has equitable facilities and resources across its campuses.
