Longview police chief details changes in 40 years on city’s force
Longview, TX — April 16, 1973, marked Longview Police Chief Don Dingler’s first shift as a patrol officer with the department.
And the way the department trains new officers, Dingler said, has changed quite a bit since then.
“I was working midnights,” he recalled recently after completing his 40th year on the force. “I put on the uniform that night and went straight to the patrol car. At that time, you didn’t have to go to training before you were able to go out in a car.
“They put me with a veteran officer, and we started training the first night. I kind of went through several months of on-the-job training. I never went to the academy to learn what a police officer does.”
Born and raised in Longview, Dingler said he had his sights set on a different career when he was growing up.
