Longview preservation commission considers funding nonprofit
Longview — An arm of Longview’s preservation committee began talking Tuesday about creating a nonprofit group to fund preservation projects.
“We need to find out how we get one started. Do we need to get a speaker here from Galveston or Austin or Fort Worth?” asked Historic Preservation Commission Chairman Gerald Bratz during a meeting of the Subcommittee for Historic Districts and Properties.
The idea to create an independent, nonprofit organization, has been tossed about by the commission for several months, but Tuesday marked the first official conversation into how to go about creating the group.
Such a group either would donate money to projects or buy endangered properties to restore them.
Similar foundations exist in other Texas towns such as San Antonio and Galveston, and commission members said they had proved effective in curbing the loss of those cities’ oldest buildings.
