Longview retailers ramped up for sales tax savings weekend
Longview, TX — It’s not quite like Christmas. But for Longview-area retailers, this weekend’s break on state sales tax is about the next best thing, according to a local store manager.
Ward Sutton, manager of Target in the Longview Towne Center, said he expects the combination of tax-free items along with next week’s start of area schools to make for a potentially busy few days.
“We’ll be fully staffed,” Sutton said. “This is definitely one of our busiest weekends of the year.”
A review of a year’s worth of sales for the Longview Target indicated the state’s sales tax weekend was the store’s seventh-busiest in the past year.
Longview Mall Manager Julie Rigby said she knows a number of the shopping center’s retailers will be extending hours to handle the rush of shoppers.
“Our stores are ramping up on staffing,” Rigby said. “This is always a very strong weekend for us with an increase in traffic.”
One of those Longview Mall retail locations with expanded hours will be JCPenney, according to Manager Julie Tower. The store will have a marathon 16-hour sales day Saturday when it will be open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., she said.
The store also will have extended hours Friday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, she said.
“In addition to sales tax break, we’re having lots of sale items throughout the store and offering coupon savings on top of that,” Tower said. “This is the biggest weekend of the year for us before the Christmas holiday season.”
Rigby said many other retailers are adding their own incentives to entice customers into their stores over the weekend.
