Longview students place in first meat judging contest
Longview — Longview High School’s Future Farmers of America team placed as reserve champions this month during the school’s first state meat judging competition.
The team soon will be part of a $2.2 million meat lab, slated to open in August, where students will lean how to vaccinate, de-horn, pull blood and castrate livestock.
Agriculture and science teacher John Denson took four students to the state competition at Texas A&M University after the school placed in the top five of its area to qualify.
“For them to place this high in their first year. The students had to learn quickly to apply the knowledge from the classroom in ‘real world’ applications,” Denson said in a prepared statement.
There were 1,300 schools in the state with which Longview students were up against.
