Longview middle school students on Monday celebrated Mexico’s victory over the French at the 1862 Battle of Puebla during a Cinco de Mayo presentation.

The Foster Middle School program showcased diversity for students in sixth through eighth grades, and served to educate them on significant events in other cultures.

“We want to expose and educate children on other cultures,” Foster Middle School Principal John York said. “We want them to appreciate what goes on in cultures other than the ones they’re familiar with.”

Student dancers performed the traditional Mexican dance “Jarabe Tapatio” — commonly known as the Mexican hat dance. They followed that by a line dance to the Spanish version of Billy Ray Cyrus’ 1992 hit single, “Achy, Breaky, Heart.”

Activities were preceded by a presentation of the Mexican flag and a brief history of Cinco de Mayo by eighth graders Vanessa Monsivais and Alejandro Onofre.
