Longview, Tyler mayors praise cooperation, say more is needed in coming years
Longview, TX — A lot has been accomplished in the more than five years since Longview and Tyler city councils sat down to discuss regional issues, but more remains to be done, Longview Mayor Jay Dean and former Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass said this past week.
A February 2009 joint meeting at the Tyler Rose Garden, shortly after Bass took office in 2008, touched on local economic development, education, fiscal responsibility and efforts to increase the area’s visibility in Austin and Washington.
Both mayors served their cities for the longest amount of time allowed under term limits. Bass ended her third two-year term in May. Dean will complete his third three-year term next May.
“I think we recognize that in today’s world, it is even more important that we look at what we can do as a region,” Bass said. “Any major project that affects the region supports the entire area. If we speak with one voice in Austin, then we get more attention than communities that don’t try to get together and collaborate.”
