Come September first, there are some basic changes in the law concerning carrying a concealed handgun in Texas.
And the one thing they have in common is that they make the whole process easier.
But is that necessarily a good thing?
Gun owners fought long and hard to get the CHL passed years ago.
But some we talked to are worried that we’re making it too easy.
The concealed carry instructors we spoke with had mixed feelings about changes to the law.
For starters, the course required for the license is now 10 hours. Soon, it can be as short as 4 hours.
But with shorter classes, more can apply and the state makes more money.
And renewing your license after 5 years now requires no refresher course, just filling out a form and writing a check.
There are two basic types of handgun, a revolver and a semi automatic.
And if you want a concealed handgun license, the kind of gun you use makes a difference.
If you qualify with a revolver, that’s all you can carry.
That rule is now gone.
Mack Woods of “The Shootist” gunshop is skeptical.
“I’ve used the analogy to you and others before,” he says. “It’s kind of like the public schools. Every time the legislature meets, the program gets a little bit dumber.”
So getting the license is easier, and renewing it is easier still.
Only time will tell if that proves to be wiser.

Oh for heaven's sake, the shooting qualification is a joke to begin with. The classroom has many things taught that are unnecessary & not even a part of carrying a gun. Things like trigger locks, safes, the application process (after all, they know that already cause they are applying!!!)

A gun is not a car and is far simpler to use. All they need is to understand the laws on self defense and where they can legally carry. Anything else they want to learn they can go to professionals for, later!
