Lufkin chase ends with man ramming squad cars, 18-wheeler
AS REPORTED IN THE LUFKIN DAILY NEWS:
A Houston man is in the Angelina County Jail after leading local authorities on a chase that ended with him ramming squad cars before hitting an 18-wheeler head-on in Diboll.
The chase began early Sunday morning, when Robert Jones, 36, hit a vehicle in Diboll and left the scene, heading north on U.S. 59 toward Lufkin, according to Lufkin Police Asst. Chief Gerald Williamson. Jones’ vehicle was then spotted in Lufkin around 5:35 a.m. on Loop 287. When the officer directed him to pull over, Jones did a U-turn in the median near Al Meyer Ford and fled south toward Diboll.
On the south side of Diboll, Jones turned his company van on local authorities, including Lufkin, Hudson and Diboll Police and the Angelina County Sheriff’s Office. Illinois-based truck driver Harold Pygott said he pulled over to allow a fleet squad cars to pass him. Pygott then found himself in the middle of the action minutes later.
“They had him surrounded and he started ramming police cars. There were about 25 police on the scene,” Pygott said. “He started back north, crossed the highway and hit me head-on. He even refused medical treatment. They had to use the stun gun to get him out of the van. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
