Visitors to the Angelina Benefit Rodeo at the George H. Henderson Jr. Exposition Center in Lufkin this week will see some improvements, renovations and new equipment.

Thanks to grants from the T.L.L. Temple Foundation and the Ernest L. Kurth, Jr. Charitable Foundation, along with gifts from the Lufkin Host Lions Club and the Rodeo Association, patrons will see about $1 million in improvements, according to Expo Center Director Burt Hairgrove. The improvements include fresh paint to the facility and renovations to the bathrooms, concession stands and the upstairs special events room.

“These concession stands were put in about 1983 or ’84 with plywood and Formica counter tops,” Hairgrove said. “At 30 years old, they’ve served their time. With the help of the Rodeo Association, we’ve been able to come in and totally gut the concession area and go back in with new walls, new paint, new fixtures, all stainless new equipment and counter tops. This is a real commercial kitchen now. We’ve got new windows in the front. It’s just a lot cleaner, and we’re ready to serve.”
