On the last Wednesday of each month, a group of local women meet to drink coffee, talk and sew pillows for heart patients.

As part of Woodland Heights’ Senior Circle program, the Brunch Bunch spends about an hour-and-a-half sewing heart-shaped pillows to benefit people recovering from open heart surgery.

“The pillows are essential for patients recovering from open heart surgery. Coughing, and sometimes even moving, is far more comfortable when a patient hugs the pillow to their chest,” said Christie Maddux, marketing representative and Senior Circle coordinator at Woodland Heights Medical Center. “They’re heart shaped because they’re made with love, but the shape also makes them easier to hold on to.”

Once the coffee’s ready, the women break into stations, with some cutting fabric, some ironing the fabric, some sewing the pillows and others stuffing the ones almost ready to go. About 30 pillows are made during each meeting.
