The Lufkin ISD Board of Trustees will vote Thursday on a proposal to name the field at Abe Martin Stadium in memory of Coach John Outlaw.

“Our Tri-Ethnic Committee met and discussed different ideas, and the unanimous decision from the committee was to make the recommendation to the school board that we name the field John Outlaw Memorial Field at Abe Martin Stadium,” Lufkin ISD Superintendent Roy Knight said during the school board’s finance meeting Tuesday. “I feel like that is an appropriate way to honor and memorialize Coach Outlaw, while still continuing to honor Coach Abe Martin.”

Knight said there has been a part of the community that proposed replacing Martin’s name with Outlaw’s, but the committee did not want to remove anyone’s name from current facilities.
