Lufkin, TX — The Lufkin school board this week will decide whether to pursue legal action over the state’s “inequitable funding” system, according to Superintendent Roy Knight.

The board will discuss the issue in executive session at its regular board meeting Thursday night, Knight said Tuesday.

The Equity Center out of Austin contacted Knight a month ago about being part of the litigation that will “attack the school finance system for its lack of: efficiency ... adequacy ...and meaningful discretion,” according to a letter addressed to Knight from the center.

As it stands, schools are funded based on property values in 2006. Districts may not glean extra funding even if property values rise in their area.

For some districts, that equates to more than $11,000 per child. In Angelina County, the six independent school districts receive less than $5,000 per child.

“This maintains that inequity exists that penalizes students and taxpayers,” Knight said. “We are unable to raise the same amount per penny that a neighboring district can.”
