Lufkin: Local volunteer fire departments struggling
Lufkin, TX — Dealt a financial blow by a rash of summer wildfires, local volunteer fire departments are now gearing up for the high season of house fires on limited budgets.
Angelina County’s nine volunteer departments protect 837 square miles using money and resources provided in part by the county, Texas Forest Service, community donations and their own fundraising efforts. Although the Lufkin Fire Department runs emergency medical service throughout the county, the department only provides fire suppression within Lufkin city limits — 34 square miles — unless requested through mutual aid agreements, according to Lufkin Fire Chief Ted Lovett.
