Lufkin OKs first reading of law barring panhandling in road
The Lufkin City Council on Tuesday approved the first reading of an ordinance that would prohibit solicitation of occupants of vehicles on city roadways.
City officials said the proposed measure is the result of an increase in solicitation by individuals from vehicle occupants in traffic on city streets, which could threaten the safety and welfare of vehicle occupants and pedestrians.
Council members would still need to approve a second reading before the ordinance takes effect.
Council members also accepted a $794,100 supplemental disaster recovery fund grant related to Hurricane Ike Round 2 Phase 1 funding.
According to city documents, funding from the grant will be used to remove, reconstruct and regrade existing roads and sidewalks in the area of Pinewood Park Apartments to improve drainage and reduce flooding.
