The city of Lufkin and Main Street Lufkin will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon with a 30-minute ceremony Sunday.

The ceremony is scheduled for 7:40 a.m. Sunday at Louis Bronaugh Park on Charlton Street, next to Lufkin City Hall.

Main Street Lufkin Director Barbara Thompson said because it’s the 10th anniversary, they are not conducting the ceremony to acknowledge the people who caused the tragedy.

“We’re not honoring them. It’s all about honoring the people who died on that day,” Thompson said. “And there were a lot of people who were touched by that. People from East Texas went there to be part of it or had relatives who died. This is just something we want to do to remember them. It was such a cowardly act that we can’t just let this go without acknowledging those who died.”
