Lufkin, TX — The Lufkin Independent School District board of trustees passed a resolution Thursday night to join hundreds of other districts in a lawsuit against the state of Texas.

According to the resolution, the board authorized $1 per weighted average daily attendance (WADA) be spent on joining the litigation aimed at making the public education funding system equitable.

The Equity Center of Austin contacted Superintendent Roy Knight one month ago about being part of the statewide litigation.

The center claims the 2011 state legislature did nothing to ease the financial burden on districts, and the current funding system is inequitable and inadequate.

Approximately $10,500 would be spent by Lufkin ISD to join the litigation, Knight said. That money would be reimbursed if the Equity Center wins its case.

“The issue for the district, like so many others, is fairness,” board president Trent Ashby said. “We think our children are just as valuable as others from across the state. We hope this litigation will compel the legislature to do something.”
