Lufkin teen reported as dead is in critical condition after being taken off life support
Lufkin, TX — More than 24 hours after being taken off life support, a Lufkin teenager continues to breathe on his own in a Tyler hospital.
Following a Sunday morning wreck on FM 1194, Jaron Parrish, 19, was flown to East Texas Medical Center-Tyler, where he remained on life support until Tuesday morning. After being told by doctors that Parrish was brain-dead, his family made the decision to take him off life support, a family member said. Since that time, Parrish has defied the odds and his prognosis, continuing to breathe on his own.
According to information that Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Rodney Tucker received from a Tyler-area justice of the peace, the doctors have changed Parrish's diagnosis from brain-dead to a severe brain injury. He was listed in critical condition at the Tyler hospital as of midday Wednesday.
It was previously reported Parrish died Tuesday morning, based on information Tucker received from Tyler officials.
