AS REPORTED IN THE LUFKIN DAILY NEWS:

A head-on collision on U.S. highway 69 south sent a Lufkin woman to the hospital Wednesday afternoon with unknown injuries.

Franquanita Williams, 19, was attempting to turn left onto U.S. 69 south from Tower Lane when her Mazda 3 was struck head on by a southbound truck pulling a trailer, according to Lufkin Police Officer Eddie Ibarra. William’s view was blocked by a log truck turning onto Tower Lane around 3:15 p.m., Ibarra said.

The impact crushed Williams’ car, trapping her inside, and sent the truck, driven by Robert Richard Whitley, 67, across the highway into some underbrush. Lufkin Fire arrived on the scene and worked to free the woman from her mangled car.

Williams was taken by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center-Lufkin with unknown injuries. Lufkin Police Officer Toby Standaland said it appeared the woman will be OK.
