Maine repeals law governing gay marriage
PORTLAND, Maine - Supporters of same-sex marriage are
vowing to continue the fight, after voters in Maine voted to repeal
a law allowing such unions.
With 87 percent of precincts reporting, gay-marriage foes have
53 percent of the vote. The referendum had asked Maine voters
whether they wanted to repeal a law allowing same-sex marriage that
had passed the Legislature and was signed by Gov. John Baldacci
For the gay rights movement it was a stinging defeat. Gay
marriage has now lost in every state - 31 in all - in which it has
been put to a popular vote.
Five states - Iowa, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and
Connecticut - have legalized gay marriage. But all did so through
legislation or court rulings, not by popular vote.
The chief organizer for Stand for Marriage Maine, which lobbied
for the repeal, says that "the institution of marriage has been
preserved in Maine and across the nation."

I love how people try to use what the Founding Fathers meant to further their cause. The Founding Fathers meant to cover only a small minority. The only ones that were included in their meaning of people were white, land-owning, educated people. Women had no rights. Blacks had no rights. Even poor white people had no rights. And everyone who mattered to them was Christian. The Founding Fathers never meant for the Constitution or the Bill of Rights to cover these minorities. Some of them were slave owners. So, let’s stop trying to use the Founding Fathers’ intentions to further our own platforms.
And as of now, we live in a democracy. That means, we have the right to vote on the issues, and what the majority says, goes. If less than a majority of people are allowed to make policy and laws, competing interests would constantly be fighting for the latest rule. And the court system was designed to ensure that the laws that Congress passes and the Executive branch enacts and enforces are constitutional. The courts cannot make policy. This would defeat the checks and balances that were built into this system.
As far as gays are concerned, the Founding Fathers would have jailed them, not given them rights. Personally, I don’t believe that gays should be able to marry. A marriage is between a man and a woman. If we allow gays to marry, where do we stop? What if a man wants to marry his sister? All of you are going, “no way, that’s not right,” but a few years ago, almost everyone would have said the same thing about gays. What about people marrying their pets? Once you open the definition of marriage up, how do you stop it?

1 week agoThe founding fathers used English Common Law to create our legal system - not the Bible! Stop spreading lies on a news forum.

2 weeks agoTHE LEGAL SYSTEM MAY HAVE BEEN DERIVED FROM ENGLISH COMMON LAW,BUT THE FOUNDING FATHERS BASED EVERYTHING ON THE BIBLE AND GOD'S WILL FOR MANKIND. DON'T READ MEDIA'S INTERPRETATION OF HISTORY,GO TO THE LIBRARY AND READ UP ON IT.THIS COUNTRY HAS STRAYED SO FAR FROM WHAT IT WAS BUILT ON BECAUSE OF THE FREE-WILL AND "DO IT MY WAY" THINKING OF MANKIND DOWN THROUGH THE YEARS.IF PEOPLE IN GENERAL WOULD STRAIGHTEN THEIR ACT UP AND LIVE RIGHT,WE WOULDN'T HAVE TO FOCUS SO MUCH ON THE "LEGAL SYSTEM" IN THIS DAY AND TIME!

2 weeks agoThe rights of minorities should not be up for a vote. The dictatorial majority that exists in this country is not what the founding fathers planned for, which is why we have a system of checks and balances. Civil rights should never be voted on, they should be left up to the courts to decide.
I'm not worried, though. Give it another ten years or so, and gay marriage will be the norm. The bigots will lose this fight, just like they lost the battle to keep blacks from marrying whites, and to keep women from being anything more than doormats.

2 weeks agoWe the people have a right to vote on issues in our states and on the federal level as well. Our founding fathers wanted a country that was built on the principles that are put forht in the Bible. It saddens me that so many people do not listen to what God has to say on gay marriage. He says that is a sin that can be forgiven if we ask Him to. As a Christian, I have to stand on the side of what God has to say, and not what people may be expressing as an view . God has always reached out in love, to people, that is why He offers forgiveness to us for our sins. I praise Him for that offer.
