Suspect arrested for allegedly shooting wife being held on $1 million bond in Smith Co. Jail

Smith County, Texas (KETK) —
A Tyler man who police say shot his wife in the head, Tuesday afternoon, is behind bars facing murder and assault charges.
Adrian Mata, 29, of Tyler, allegedly shot his wife Jennifer Mata, 30, around 11:07 a.m., at their home on Poplar Road in Smith County. Jennifer was rushed to a local hospital but died from her injuries around 3:00 p.m.
When authorities responded to the scene of the shooting, Adrian had fled in his car. KETK was first on scene as he was arrested at a home in The Villages subdivision located on Serenity Lane near Lake Palestine. The homeowner spoke with KETK telling us Adrian was inside her home. According to the other homeowner, Adrian worked for them and at one point during their discussion Adrian put a gun to the homeowner's head.
Jennifer, a mother of three young children, was a pharmacy technician at UT Health Northeast pharmacy.
UT Health Northeast has released a statement on the death of Jennifer stating:
"We are very saddened to hear of the death of one our UT Health Northeast family. Jennifer was a wonderful asset to our team and our hearts go out to her family."
Adrian was booked into the Smith County Jail on charges of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His bond has been set at $1,000,000.
