Jefferson — When Eugene R. Robinson left his native Wynne, Ark., in 1966 to move to this city where his wife had become a county extension agent, he never imagined how different life would become.

“I came down here for school. My wife was working here,” the 81-year-old said Thursday. “These people here, they just let folks run over them, and I couldn’t (believe) it.”

His efforts to change that had a big impact. He became the first black person elected to the City Commission and then to the Marion County Commissioners Court. Now, in observance of Black History Month, Robinson’s efforts are being recognized by Jefferson residents.
